THE MARITAL BOND

The net result of marriage is that you begin a life quite different from the one that you have lived earlier.  In olden days marriage was something different from what we mean by marriage in this era.  Man was considered to be the prominent factor in yester centuries.  The masculine nature of man and the submissive nature of the women created a thinking that a man is more powerful than the women.  It was evident in all faces of human life
Marriage was something like an undertaking of a man that he will look after his woman and cater to all her needs.  In turn the woman has to attend to the needs of the man and his children.  The upbringing of  children was mainly the duty of  women, and men just attended to the social and financial needs of a family. The result was that women had no role in deciding who her partner should be and that was always decided by the men.

The twentieth century witness a welcome change in the concept of marriage.  Marriage became a bond of love between a man and a woman.  It is the beginning of a relationship not only between a man and a woman, but also between two families.  This has resulted in a very welcome change in relationships in the society as a whole. Even though there are exceptions to this, the society on the whole has become a strong one than that of the olden days.

In this age, men and women are considered to be equals in a family.  Women also got the right to choose who her partner should be.  We have read in the newspapers about a young girl, who denied to marry the man who bargained about dowry, on her marriage day.  We cannot imagine such a thing to happen in the olden days.

Anyway, now there is no question of who is the leader of the family, because most of the men are ready to accept the strong role of a woman in the family.  Sometimes, she proves her more powerful than men in some aspects of life.

I remember a writing I have read in the Readers Digest some years ago.  A scientist used to tell his wife about his capacities as a scientist and told her that when compared with intellect, his wife is nothing before him. The wife was fed up with this boasting of her husband and one day she asked her husband to retire from his work for a week, and to fill the place of wife and perform the domestic duties.  After a week the scientist admitted that the power of a wife and mother is so great that a scientist is nothing in front of her.

Even in this advanced age, there are some people who think like that scientist.  But the irony is that at least some women does not know their importance in the family and society.
